About
Hi there, and welcome to DiscoverBass.com! My name is Gary Denyer, and I am a bassist born in 1968 in Scotland, but for the last 15 years I have been living in Delray Beach, Florida, USA.
I have been playing musical instruments since I was 6 years old, but started concentrating on bass when I was 15 (back in 1983). I have played in many bands and groups, ranging from Alternative to Fusion to Jazz, with Fusion/Funk being my specialty. Nowadays, while still remaining active in session play, I concentrate on solo bass guitar arrangements utilizing contemporary styles in finger - playing, slap, tapping and chordal techniques, with harmonics and altered tuning. The area I concentrate on most is slap techniques.
I have been teaching bass now for the past 12 years and teaching by correspondence for the last 5 years. I have independently released 3 Bass Teaching DVD's, including "Slap and Pop!" and "21 Techniques For Monster Chops!" which are available at my website GAZZBASS.COM, which has been online since March, 2000.
I list my influences as:
- Mark King (Level 42)
- Victor Wooten
- Stanley Clarke
- Marcus Miller
- Alain Caron
- Jeff Berlin
- Larry Graham
- Bootsie Collins
- John Patitucci
- Vail Johnson
- Louis Johnson
- Michael Manring
I am in the process of mastering my first solo CD, entitled "Bells And Whistles" which will be released independently later this year, under my own label "Shiny Head Records".
The first bassline I ever learned to play was the line to "Alright Now" by Free. I hope I'm not showing my age too much by saying that!
I have eight bass guitars currently... Here they are:

From left to right:
- Bryce V2 Active 6-String
- 1988 Washburn Status Series 1000
- Fender Jazz Bass Fretless
- Hoem Made Tenor Bass
- Musicman Stingray HH
- 1999 JayDee Supernatural Classic Series I Custom
- 1982 Yamaha BB3000S
- Michael Kelly Dragonfly 4N Acoustic Bass with Bridge Pickup
My main bass is the Stingray, which is a very versatile instrument that I highly recommend.
Thanks for stopping by!
Gary Denyer.
